Buckskin Bill (born Sylvan Hart) came to the Salmon River canyon in the early 1930’s, and spent his life creating a home at 5 Mile Bar until his death in 1980. He was known for his hand-made rifles, unique architectural style, and many hats. He gained fame in later years and was billed as “The last of the mountain men” in books, articles, and TV appearances. For decades, he welcomed visitors to his home, showing off his creations and sharing a wealth of knowledge about history, local ecology, and the day-to-day life of a backcountry loner.
Today, Buckskin Bill’s home remains a favorite stop along the Salmon River for rafters, jet boaters, and hikers who make their way deep into the heart of Idaho’s Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The museum provides a glimpse into the life of an Idaho legend, and visitors are welcome to wander through his homestead. The attached store provides much-appreciated supplies and treats, including the best root beer floats for many miles around.
Preserving the legacy of Idaho's beloved mountain man.
